How to Get to Siargao — Flights, Ferries & Airport Transfer
Three real ways to reach Siargao. Here's which one to pick for your trip — and what to expect when you land.
Quick answer: Fly direct to Sayak Airport (IAO) from Manila or Cebu. It's the easiest option for almost everyone. The Surigao ferry exists as a backup or budget route, but flights are usually only $50–80 more and save 6+ hours.
Option 1 — Fly direct to Sayak (recommended)
Sayak Airport (IAO), also marketed as "Siargao Airport," sits on the north end of the island. It's small, single-runway, and turns over its passenger volume in waves around the daily flight schedule.
From Manila (MNL) → Siargao (IAO)
- Airlines: Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines (PAL).
- Flight time: ~2 hours 30 minutes direct.
- Frequency: 2–4 daily flights combined across both carriers; more in high season.
- Typical price (round-trip): ₱5,500–12,000 ($100–220) depending on season and how early you book.
From Cebu (CEB) → Siargao (IAO)
- Airlines: Cebu Pacific (sometimes PAL).
- Flight time: ~1 hour direct.
- Frequency: 1–2 daily flights.
- Typical price (round-trip): ₱3,500–7,500 ($65–135).
Tip: Cebu connection works well if you're already exploring the Visayas (Bohol, Cebu, Moalboal) and want to add Siargao to a multi-island trip.
Option 2 — Fly to Surigao + ferry
Fly to Surigao City (SUG) on mainland Mindanao, then take a ferry to Siargao. Useful if Sayak flights are sold out or there's a typhoon-related cancellation.
- Manila → Surigao flight: ~1 hour 45 min, with Cebu Pacific and PAL.
- Surigao → Dapa (Siargao) fast ferry: ~3 hours, 2–3 daily departures, ₱500–700 ($9–13). Operators: Montenegro Lines, Fortune, OceanJet.
- Total transit time: ~7–9 hours including airport waits and ferry transfer.
Reality check: The ferry is rough in bad weather. If you're prone to seasickness, take medication before you board.
Option 3 — Roll-on roll-off (RoRo) overland from Manila
Possible but only worth doing if you're trying to bring a vehicle or you genuinely enjoy multi-day overland travel. Bus + ferry combo from Manila to Surigao takes 24–36 hours. Skip unless you have a specific reason.
Sayak Airport → General Luna transfer
The drive from Sayak Airport to General Luna (the main town) takes about 45–60 minutes. There's no Grab or Uber on Siargao. Your options:
- Pre-booked hotel transfer (recommended): ₱1,500–2,500 ($27–45) for a private van or car. Most hotels arrange it; just ask when you book.
- Shared van: ₱300–500 per person ($5–9). Available at the airport — wait until the van fills.
- Tricycle: Possible but slow and uncomfortable for the full distance with luggage. Not recommended unless you're traveling very light.
Booking tips
- Book Sayak flights 4–8 weeks ahead for high season (Sept–Mar). They sell out, especially around Cloud 9 contest week.
- Don't book tight connections. Domestic flights in the Philippines are often delayed; build a 3+ hour buffer if you're connecting through Manila or Cebu.
- Pack hand-carry only if possible. Sayak's baggage handling is slow.
- Check your luggage weight limit. Cebu Pacific is strict — you'll pay extra at the gate if you exceed.
- Buy travel insurance with trip-disruption coverage. Typhoons can ground flights for days.
Returning home — important
Plan to be at Sayak Airport 2 hours before your departure. Check-in counters open ~2 hours before, and the small terminal can get crowded fast. Make sure your transfer leaves General Luna with at least 90 minutes of buffer for traffic and check-in.
